Taking regular supplements including vitamin D and calcium could help improve bone health. As we age, we’ll all lose bone density, but by taking some simple actions we can limit the impact.

What are bones?

The human body is made up of 206 bones that do the incredible job of keeping us all together.

That’s the short answer. The long answer is that bones are a hard type of connective tissue that do the critical job of protecting our internal organs, providing the body’s structure and rigidity, and producing both red and white blood cells.

Bones have the incredible power to reform and heal. Our bone health peaks in our 30s, but drops after this. Over time, we lost more bone than we build which weakens them, leading to conditions such as osteoporosis.

Ok, so there’s much more to bones than this. But it’ll do for now.

Does HRT build bone?

HRT provides a lifeline for women who are dealing with menopause. Evidence shows that HRT can have a positive effect on bone health, including stimulating bone growth.

While HRT is effective at slowing bone loss, it can raise a woman’s risk of serious conditions such as cancer, which is why it’s rarely prescribed as a treatment for osteoporosis.

Should I speak to a doctor before taking supplements?

It’s important that you speak to your doctor before taking any supplements.

Some supplements can interact with prescription medications, for example. Taking too much of certain supplements could lead to side effects. Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should also be careful about the supplements they take.

We provide cautions for all products we sell, but these are generic and may not cover you, your body or your bones.

Our advice is to speak to a doctor before taking any supplements.
