What can science tell us about the benefits of vitamin D?

Scientists have established that vitamin D is critical in building stronger bones and teeth, but it does more than that. New evidence has found that vitamin D supplements can help boost the immune system, defend against type 2 diabetes. They could even help to reduce your risk of developing cancer.

Here are 5 ways vitamin D supplements could help you live better and feel stronger!

#1      Vitamin D can boost the immune system

A recent BMJ study found that vitamin D supplementation helped reduce the risk of respiratory infections, including colds and flu.

One analysis of previously published clinical trials found that regularly taking a vitamin D supplement reduced the risk of acute respiratory infections by 12%.

Another study found that daily vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of respiratory tract infections in children by 29%.

The key takeaway is that taking a vitamin D supplement each day – especially during the winter – could help boost your natural protection from colds and viruses.

There’s growing amounts of evidence that vitamin D may help reduce the risk of you developing certain cancers, including breast, prostate, and colon cancer.

A meta-analysis of observational studies found that those with higher vitamin D levels had a slightly lower risk of developing colorectal cancer.

While the evidence isn’t conclusive, ensuring you get enough vitamin D can help your body and bones.

#3      Vitamin D can boost mental health

Vitamin D supplementation has also been linked to our mental health. Several studies have found that people with low vitamin D levels had an increased risk of experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

One meta-analysis of observational studies found that low vitamin D levels were associated with a 31% increased risk of depression.

Other research found that vitamin D supplements improved symptoms of depression in people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

#4      Vitamin D can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Evidence from some studies suggests vitamin D supplements could cut the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Supplements are particularly effective for people at high risk of developing the disease.

One study found that vitamin D supplements cut the risk of developing diabetes by 13%.
