While supplements won’t cure or treat osteoporosis, the good news is your doctor will prescribe you treatments to help protect your body and bones.

But there are things you can do to improve your bone health – including getting the vitamins and minerals you need to build stronger bones.

How much vitamin D should I take for osteoporosis?

The average adult needs at least Adults need 10 micrograms (400IU) of vitamin D a day.

Some people may benefit from taking more, says the Royal Osteoporosis Society. The safe upper limit is 100mg a day, or 4000IU.

Taking too much vitamin D can be bad for your health, body, and bones.

How much calcium should I take for osteoporosis?

Adults should get 700mg of calcium every day, says the NHS.

Some adults, including those with bone problems like osteoporosis, could benefit from taking up to 1000mg daily, says the Royal Osteoporosis Society.

Taking too much calcium can have a negative impact on your bone health and cause other health problems.

Should I take a vitamin D supplement if I have osteoporosis?

You can get enough vitamin D from the sun during the summer months. However, during the autumn, winter, and spring, you can’t.

The NHS and Royal Osteoporosis Society recommend taking a vitamin D supplement if you have osteoporosis.

Should I take a calcium supplement if I have osteoporosis?

You should be able to get all the calcium you need from your diet – but many of us don’t.

Great sources of calcium include milk, cheese, and leafy green vegetables.

Taking a calcium supplement means guaranteeing you’re getting the calcium you need every day.

Relying on your diet to deliver it may mean that you don’t get enough calcium daily, which is why many people with osteoporosis take a daily supplement.

Do supplements work for osteoporosis?

It’s a great question and will depend on you and your body. Supplements are tested to ensure they deliver the dose of vitamins they promise.

So you can be sure when you’re busing a 4000iu vitamin D supplement, it’ll deliver 4000iu.
